Berlin is now easily one of my favourite cities in Europe, which is quite a bold statement for an under travelled 20-something but hey-ho. I blogged about this on my personal/work blog a while back, so apologies if you have seen this before. I feel like Berlin is the kind of city that you need to see and experience, not just read about (okay okay you should really read up on the culture and history and the cultural shifts but still).
One of my goals for the year was to explore more and it kicked off pretty well with a weekend in culture capital! For our work Christmas party, we spent the weekend in Berlin; walking a lot, then drinking and eating a whole lot more. I’ll be completely honest, this trip absolutely obliterated me due to the amount of walking. If I didn’t have my sketchers to wear, I probably wouldn’t have made it past the 4th hour. We averaged 20 000 steps every day – anyone who has a chronic pain condition will understand I’m sure, it took me a few weeks to really recover but the city was so beautiful and I love being able to look back with this little video I pulled together.
If you’re like me and you enjoy visiting places purely for how visually interesting they are, I highly recommend Berlin. I couldn’t put my camera away and it was great to have a place so raw and beautiful to film. Also, great beer & food.
TOP TIP: We went on an alternative tour of Berlin which you NEED to do if you visit. It’s FREE and the guide was so knowledgeable and friendly. Instead of him reeling off millions of boring facts that were meaningless to us tourists, he told us the real stories of East & West Berlin and how street art barely survived. You can find them >>here<<.
If you do find yourself in Berlin, be sure to pack your walking shoes; we walked over 25 000 steps every day we were there! (Yes, I only just realised my iPhone has been tracking my steps every day since I got it. Check the Health app out. Mindblown.)
